Frequently asked questions
- How do I add my product?
- Press Add your voice on the home page. Fill in the product name, website, category and your name, then record or upload your pitch.
- How long can my pitch be?
- Recording stops at 60 seconds. An uploaded file can be up to 4.0 MB and about 60 seconds long, in webm, ogg, mp3, m4a or wav format.
- Why isn't my entry in the lineup yet?
- New entries are saved as pending and are not public. They appear after the site team approves them.
- How is the lineup ranked?
- Sponsored entries first (highest amount first, earlier entry wins a tie), then free entries in the order the site team has chosen: oldest first, newest first or most plays first. Details are on How it works.
- What does “Sponsored” mean?
- The entry has a confirmed payment, so its amount is above $0 and it ranks above free entries. An entry is marked sponsored only after the payment provider confirms the payment.
- Can I pay to rank higher?
- Only when the site team has switched sponsored placement on. When it is off, the home page says “Paid placement is not available yet”. When it is on, amounts are whole dollars from $1 to $10,000, and you pay on the payment provider's hosted page (Dodo Payments).
- Can I change or remove my entry?
- Entries are edited, hidden or deleted by the site team. There is no self-service editing yet.
- Are plays counted?
- Yes. A play is counted once per entry per page visit when the audio starts, and each visitor can add up to 30 counted plays an hour. The count is shown on each entry.
- What does Open Mic store?
- For each entry: the product name, website, category, founder name, the audio file, its length, the number of plays and when it was submitted. The audio is kept in a public storage bucket, so anyone with its link can play it. For a sponsored placement it also keeps the amount, currency, payment status and the payment provider's reference numbers. The email address typed for a payment receipt goes to the payment provider; Open Mic's own database has no field for it. To limit abuse, a counter is kept against a one-way scrambled form of your network address for about an hour; the address itself is not stored.
